Legendary College Basketball Coach Bob Knight Dies at 83

Bob Knight died Wednesday at the age of 83. Bob Knight was a Hall of Fame college basketball coach who ranked sixth in Division I history in wins. He was known for his erratic personality and explosiveness on the court, but he also coached at Indiana University.

Born in Massillon, Ohio, Knight played basketball at Ohio State and was a member of the 1960 national championship team. After graduation, he served as a high school assistant coach before becoming head coach at Army in 1965.

In 1971, Knight was hired as the head coach at Indiana University. in 1976, Knight coached Indiana to an undefeated 32-0 record, an accomplishment that has not been matched since.

Knight won two more national championships at Indiana in 1981 and 1987. He was also named National Coach of the Year four times and Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times.

Known for his strict coaching style and fiery temper, Knight was fired by Indiana in 2000 for grabbing a student by the throat during practice.

After leaving Indiana, Knight coached Texas Tech from 2001 to 2008, winning 138 games and advancing to the NCAA Tournament four times.

In 1991, Knight was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal winning team.

Knight leaves behind his wife, Karen, and two children, Pat and Tim.
